John Armstrong: "Who caused the financial panic of the last few weeks? Republicans blame Fannie and Freddie. Bill O’Reilly nightly gets angry at the greedy Wall Street CEOs and corrupt congressmen. Democrats blame President Bush and the run-away free market. Republicans blame the Cintonites for creating massive entitlements and starting this mess. Democrats believe "trickle down" economics has finally failed and Republicans believe "pork spending" is the culprit. There is blame everywhere. And there is truth in some of all of it. But no one seems willing to tell us the whole truth. We have met the enemy and it is "us." "They" did a lot of harm for sure. But it is "we" who borrowed and spent like crazy and then expected...

Barack Obama: How He Did It
Fascinating, sometimes gossipy behind-the-scenes look at the Presidential campaign. The fact that the reporters ‘were granted year-long access on the condition that none of their findings appear until after Election Day’ is pretty dubious, though.

Bha iomairt (fo) taghaidh airson Gleann Rathais (air a chumail leis an Teachdaire Dhùn Dèagh) a’ gabhail àite a-raoir agus na tagraichean uile an làthair. I am back from the time off for our wedding and honeymoon and there will be some blog posts on the way soon, particularly, I hope on South Africa, which I found a fascinating country. But for now I am just pointing in the direction of things that are catching my attention on the web today: Apple are having yet another product release event today (@6pm UK time), greatest anticipation is for the new Apple Laptop range with rumours of a sub£500 laptop and an upgraded line of MacBook Pro’s. I’m looking on with hopeful optimism as they are releasing what I hope will be my next computer purchase (though not until they have filtered into the refurb section!) There are also rumours that Microsoft is looking to buy out Blackberry (RIM) which would make sense as Microsoft...

Mandelson: ‘I’m joined at the hip with PM’ | Politics | The ObserverI’m still totally confused by the return of Mandelson. It seems inevitable that he’ll go down in flames for the umpteenth time, and no one can stand him, not even the Blairites. What on earth was Brown thinking?

An excellent piece of writing by Nick Cohen in Standpoint regarding the some convoluted mindset of the BBC. …the disasters of the Bush Administration and their own intellectual and aesthetic inadequacies have allowed writers to get away with a bad faith that would have had them booed off the stage in less fevered times. As a matter of course, BBC writers have blamed crimes against humanity perpetrated by the enemies of the West on the “root cause” of Western provocation. Occasionally, but more frequently than the casual viewer might appreciate, they have gone a step further and presented the atrocities of totalitarianism as the atrocities of the West. Maybe they were frightened that they would upset their employers or friends if they wrote honestly. More...

I’ve been observing the presidential and party nominee races with from somewhat more of a distance than the last presidential election during which I was studying American politics. Firstly I have to say that I am glad that I can sit back here in Scotland and not have to be involved in American Politics, it seems such a messy playground, for Christians in particular, in a way that it isn’t the UK. That’s not to say UK Politics isn’t a messy playground but there is a much higher rate of political ignorance and apathy in the UK, there is not dream or great nation that anyone is striving to maintain, just the monotony of two parties who are only distinguishable from each other by the side of the house they sit on. Interestingly though, American politics does...

There will surely be a critique of his involvement and the contents of the prayer, but all in all I think it is very well written, with a balance on the political issues at hand and a recognition that it is Gods inbreaking into the lives and society of America. Father God, This week, as the world looks on, help the leaders in this room create a civil dialogue about our future. We need you, God, as individuals and also as a nation. We need you to protect us from our enemies, but also from ourselves, because we are easily tempted toward apathy. Give us a passion to advance opportunities for the least of these, for widows and orphans, for single moms and children whose fathers have left. Give us the eyes to see them, and the ears to hear them, and hands willing to serve them....
