Flickr Downloads via Byrnesys Blabberings September 1st, 2008 at 15:42

image A few years ago I had just bought first digital camera I signed up for the new photo service flickr. Now Flickr is widely considered to be one of the best online photo storage sites and I have had a paid membership for the last 3 years. One added benefit of Flickr is that it provides an offsite backup for all of your photos which means should your external hard drive, PC and laptop all give up the ghost in one fowl swoop or are involved in some catastrophic event (such as a house fire!) all your precious memories are stored somewhere else. Should this ever actually occur though there isn’t to my knowledge a way to download your full catalogue of photos which sets us up for the entrance of freeware application Flump: "Flump downloads all the photos from a user-specified...

End of Week Technology Round Up via Byrnesys Blabberings August 14th, 2008 at 15:14

image After work today we are driving down to Glasgow for our good friends Martin and Lindsay’s wedding, so I’ve posted the end of week a little earlier than usual. I was waiting for this to happen: so called ‘tethering’ turns your iPhone 3G into a wireless modem with 3G Internet speeds (thanks to an app) where ever you are…What’s that I hear operators nervously applying download caps to their unlimited iPhone data packages? This is a rather geektastic display of the top ten crazy monitor setups. iPhone 3G is going out to more countries, so maybe I wont have to worry about roaming a pick up a PAYG 3G when O2 releases it earlier this year, (not looking forward to data charges though!) Delta are rolling out wifi in 2009 for all domestic flights - Would...

End of Week Round up - update via Byrnesys Blabberings August 1st, 2008 at 19:45

image Here’s a great place to find free religious audio books of a catholic persuasion TheologyForum have written an interesting post on the nature of Apologetics IPSUM ESSE has written some useful reflections on Aberdeen’s Francesca Murphy’s book "God is not a Story" which cannot be purchased for any less than £60 according to my research whilst trying to find it. Brian Brock was right, he does write the cheaper books at the faculty in Aberdeen (just kidding Brian) faith and theology writes a review of Engaging the Doctrine of God which Aberdeen’s John Webster contributed to.New Kid on the Blog: theological scribbles from Robin Parry takes on a big one, Israel and the Church in his quest to lose his friends. Here is a well balanced review of The Shack,...

Mid Week Round Up via Byrnesys Blabberings July 23rd, 2008 at 14:14

image Theres plenty to get through today, normally there is a bit of a smorgasborg of topics, so decided to divide the round up a bit more topically this week (needless to say the topic headings are hopelessly inadequate), let me know if that is useful: Theology/Church Stuff: Scot McKnight just started blogging through a book Rachel gave me for my Graduation - The Mission of God  by Christopher Wright Ill be reading it along with this series. The Mission of God: Unlocking the Bible’s Grand Narrative John Stackhouse has written an excellent post for people considering a PhD, well worth a read, it certainly quelled my fantasies of Post Grad work! Jason Clark gives you a peek into his PhD research. Andy White writes a helpful post on the subject of why your visions should be...

New iTunes App Store: Guitar Toolkit via Byrnesys Blabberings July 10th, 2008 at 13:32

image Ive started to browse the newly released Apps Store, just out of interest really, not because I have an iPhone. I stumbled across a few interesting apps, particularly for the guitarists out there - Guitar Toolkit, it includes a chromatic tuner Chord Maps Open Tunings Library Metronome Audible Tones for tuning by ear At £5.99 its one of the pricier apps but it might be quite useful to have something like this on your phone. Screenshots from iTunes below:   Update: If you cant find the app store in your iTunes store, search for an app company such as AOL then find an app, go to it’s page, then use the tab on the top left to go to the homepage of the app store. This is either pretty good subversive marketing (probably) or someone is going...

Firefox 3 Problems? via Byrnesys Blabberings July 10th, 2008 at 12:13

image Whilst Firefox 2 used to use up RAM like no ones business (who even knows what that saying means!) Firefox 3 has been increasingly killing my Processor and over the last few days has thrown me a  ‘Firefox has unexpectedly had to close’ type window. Granted I did have around 20 tabs opened at the time, and the very useful restore session function helped me get those live bookmarks back but still. Anyone else having problems?Similar Posts:None Found...

End of Week Round Up via Byrnesys Blabberings June 27th, 2008 at 20:29

image Jim Martin shared some excellent insights on waiting as a spiritual discipline from Richard Foster. Halden lists texts to read before you go to seminary, interesting, and vast selection, No time for a summer job with this reading list! Some Commentators weighed in with some others too, firstly Wess Daniels, then in response to that Kyle Bernett adds some more (Kyle’s list is better In my opinion) and finally Andy Rowell. My Advice would be, try and get hold of the course details for the first courses and read the primary and secondary texts. On Similar lines I noticed Andy Rowell talks about seminary and lists off a few US Seminaries which might be of interest, he concludes by linking to Theologian John Stackhouse’s Blog who makes a compelling case for seminary....

Mid Week Roundup via Byrnesys Blabberings June 26th, 2008 at 11:49

image I was hoping to continue the 21st Century Missions series earlier this week but I have had no time to get the responses together. Thanks to everyone who has responded so far though, there are some great thoughts and it will be well worth the wait. Theologian Douglas Knight shares some interesting Barthian thoughts on Marriage from CDIII.4. Do you know of any other theological treatments of marriage? Also there is a sample chapter available from the new edition of the Church Dogmatics which will include translations of all Latin and Greek texts, presented alongside the original texts. Tom Smith at SoulGardeners writes a great reflection on how as Jesus-followers, University education should not be primarily motivated by money-making or getting the advantage but by being equipped to...

Blackberry Touch via Byrnesys Blabberings June 18th, 2008 at 10:55

image Yes please! Whilst considering how to best convince my place of work that instead of upgrading within the blackberry family this year we should upgrade to the ‘now includes PUSH technology because we want blackberry users’ 3G iPhone I have come across this preview of the first touch screen blackberry tentatively named Blackberry Thunder and am considering re-thinking my plans to bargain for a 3G iPhone (it was never going to happen). BGR has the run down…looks sweet. Similar Posts:None Found...

Firefox 3:First reactions via Byrnesys Blabberings June 17th, 2008 at 22:41

image Well, many of you who went to download firefox 3 might have been as perplexed as me when you continued to see firefox 2 being advertised 4 hours after the expected release date, well after clearing my browser history data I asked google and it turns out that mozilla weren’t too smart when they decided to go for guiness world record as it gave themone almioghty spike on their data servers. All is resolved so were told and I have now managed to download Firefox 3.Some  very brief first impressions from me are:Very Slick look syncs in with the OS you are using. Click here for the example.Much Faster, on my meagre iBook G4, RAM hungry firefox 2 was sluggish, firefox 3 is noticably quicker and smoother.Great additions such is the smart bookmarks. One of the first things I have done...

Start of the week round up via Byrnesys Blabberings June 16th, 2008 at 17:33

image Yes, only one post since last weeks round up and I have a plethora of posts for you. I am wondering if these round ups are overkill, but I do enjoy cataloging the finds for my own use at any rate. Andy White has re:launched his site with a fancy new design and lots of ‘:’s. Andy is a great blogger and I’m looking forward to reading more of his technology, blogging and Big Life words. I’m starting a new blog series on Missions in the 21st Century, it will focus on  responses from guest bloggers and I’ve had some great responses already which I am excited to post over the next few weeks, so keep checking in for that. Cool Tools is a great blog that I keep bookmarked, it features reviews on great books, gadgets and software and always picks up on...

End of Week Round up via Byrnesys Blabberings June 13th, 2008 at 17:25

image Just a few things to keep you interested over the weekend Christian Resources charity Demarus has published some good resources for using the Narnia movie, a theme I picked up a little while ago in a round up. Trevin Wax posts a great insight into missions in his post ‘When the Missionary Honeymoon is Over’ - Trevin will hopefully be a guest on this site in the next few weeks as a part of a series I’m starting answering some questions on the subject of missions, so stay tuned for that. Theology Blog Inhabitio Dei has posted a template for reading the New testament in a week which I am planning to attempt along with my good friend at YWAM and lapsed blogger John Gillespie! I stumbled across a good web designer here in Scotland who created the episcopal denominations...

iPhone 3G - WWDC (W for WOW) via Byrnesys Blabberings June 10th, 2008 at 10:54

image Well, I knew it would be more of a surprise if they didnt release a 3G iPhone than if they did, but somehow whilst reading through the coverage today I am still very excited! Here are what I think are the big additions from last nights keynote (which can be read in full here) New iPhone Operating system called iPhone 2.0 with PUSH service for emails etc (eg. Blackberry replacement!)The well covered 3rd party applications will soon be available, which is likely to introduce some pretty incredible tools for the iPhone, ebay, typepad showed off some pretty uninteresting apps, but Im sure there is some serious software goodness on its way!MobileMe the (long overdue) replacement for dot mac has arrived and looks completely amazing! Check it out at http://www.apple.com/mobileme/...

WWDC - Bring on the 3G iPhone via Byrnesys Blabberings June 9th, 2008 at 14:58

image Well @ 6pm (UK - GMT) Steve Jobs’ WWDC Keynote will begin which is strongly rumoured to be the event which reveals the new 3G iPhone, a moment Ive been waiting for since the iPhone was originally introduced, and a moment dreaded by the thousands of people with 1st Generation iPhones snagged into 2 year contracts have been dreading! You can log onto MacWorld or Engadget who are covering the event live, and then we’ll all rush to the Apple/O2 store tomorrow to see them in the flesh! Similar Posts:None Found...

iCall on the iPod Touch via Byrnesys Blabberings June 6th, 2008 at 13:33

image I noticed this app for iPhone today which enables you to make Voip calls in wifi areas and switch between voip and GSM to save minutes..pretty nifty. I was wondering, surely VOIP software would work on an iPod Touch? It has wifi, and if it was jailbroken then you could install voip apps? Has anyone tried this? If would certainly be a cheap way of having an iPhone if, like me, you are almost always within some kind of wifi network, it could act as a second phone, or even better as an internationally roaming iPhone, without the contract and ridiculous roaming rates I discussed before. Engadget has the low down on the iCall software which looks pretty cool. One point though, do you think they could have come up with a name that is slightly more distinct from Apple’s calendar app...

Mid Week round up via Byrnesys Blabberings May 13th, 2008 at 17:11

image Probably the first of its kind in the UK, Worship Central, a really superb ministry from Holy Trinity Brompton, has worked with Kings College London to produce an MA in contemporary worship.   Tearfund have begun publishing Daily prayer podcasts, though somehow whilst moving house last week I lost my iPod!Trevin Wax writes well on the subject of being ecumenical. A new free (ish) UK service called freesat is being launched which offers digital HD broadcasting and a good number of channels, even to those areas (like up here in the depths of Scotland) where you can’t get freeview.Had I not recently broken my canon SD300 I would be doing this in a second, lifehacker have featured free software which you can load onto your point and shoot canon through the memory card to...

Has photogrpahy lost its art? via Byrnesys Blabberings May 1st, 2008 at 11:31

image I have to be honest, recently I have been pointing and shooting with digital cameras, I have been choosing quantity over quality, when it comes to photography less has definatly not meant more.I really enjoy photography but with the age of cheap digital memory I have discovered the ability to take cheap shots (thanks, I thought thatup all by myself). I found this site about Kenneth Parker today, a large format photographer who takes almost the exact opposite approach: Most of Parker’s photographs are captured over the course of 5-10 day backpacking excursions hauling 75-85 pounds of large-format camera equipment as he becomes immersed in a profound sense of place. Often several days are spent contemplating the changing light and intimacy of a composition before completing a single...

Some Blogging tools via Byrnesys Blabberings April 30th, 2008 at 17:06

image There has been little to no content here for a while, not because I haven’t been thinking of the things I normally do, more just because I don’t have time to process it into something readable, so please except my apologies whilst I blog about some blogging tools I’ve come across in the last few months.Browser Shots - A great website that let you check if you blog looks OK in browsers and Operating systems you can’t check them on. Check my sites example hereMySpace Cross Poster - This works as a Wordpress plugin and does what it says on the tin, it took me a few tweaks to get it working but it fixed the problem I had of trying to automate blog posts from wordpress onto my myspace blog. Hearing lots of positive rumblings about mint enthused me to take a look...

Textism: Podswollop Most of the podcasts I listen to are actually radio programmes too. Or made by professional broadcasters. (Podcasting is a new mode of distribution, but it’s not a new medium.) New: Video Comments On All TechCrunch Blogs This is the stupidest idea I’ve seen in a long time. Print writing versus web writing « gilest I’d add "You probably get paid | You probably don’t’ ;-) Documentary Section Announced - News - Edinburgh International Film Festival For whatever reason, it’s always the docs I see at the EIFF that stick in my mind. O2 slash 8GB iPhone to £169 via Byrnesys Blabberings April 15th, 2008 at 16:09

image Yet another strong sign that Apple will be releasing a 3G and altogether higher spec iPhone within the next few months, O2 have followed suite from T-mobile in Germany in offering the first price reductions on iPhone handsets seen since its release.O2 Shop is till showing the 8GB model for sale for £269 as off 16:00 15th April 2008.This is the point where O2 hope you scramble on the dirt for your chance to own an iPhone for less than £200 and then releases the 32GB 3G iPhone and makes you feel less than wise!Similar Posts:Behind the hype of the iPhone iPhone or not? Mid Week Round Up via Byrnesys Blabberings April 9th, 2008 at 17:09

image Plenty of News and good blogging going right now, these are in no particular order there is tech, apple, theology and everything else crammed in:The mighty design software company adobe has released a beta version of free web based software called Photoshop Express. It has some great tools for retouching and free storage. Best of all you get your own address .photoshop.com so I snapped up liam.photoshop.com I havent had the chance to put anything up on it, as the most of my photos are on flickr.Maggi Dawn features a link which shows us why not to aspire to look like cover girls (or boys for that matter)Very Interesting post on ex-communication, something the 21st Century Church doesn’t like to talk about. John Piper explains that excommunication although seemingly harsh is in fact...

Internationally roaming with an iPhone via Byrnesys Blabberings March 24th, 2008 at 16:34

image The Desire for an iPhoneAs I have mentioned before, Ive had a fair amout of experience negotiating mobile/cell phone contracts and have tried to share some tips on the blog before, but recently I have more or less stopped following the market due to my unsaitable interest in the iPhone.I set my current phone contract up so that it would expire just at the time when the iPhone was released, as I mentioned back then I expected the price tag for the phone but the UK contracts with O2 were extremely over-priced and so I decided to let the contract price calm down a little before I invested. More recently O2 have adjusted the contracts to make them more appealing and less geared to recouping the expected outlays for unlimited data plans, but on revisiting the idea of buyig an iPhone I am...

image UPDATE/APOLOGY: To those reading the RSS feed (who likely wouldnt read this update anyway) I published this before some re-formats and spell checks and so it may look a horrendous mess in the feedreader. …and plenty of it! I have been busy this week, but not to busy to pick up some interesting news, links and posts. Apologies for the massive length of this post, but its two round ups in one as I didnt manage my normal mid week round up this week, enjoy:Apple is thinking about offering subcription-based unlimited iTunes downloads Ft reports: "Detailed market research has shown strong appetite among consumers for deals bundling music in with the cost of the device, or in exchange for a monthly subscription, executives said. One executive said the research had shown that consumers...

Mid week round up via Byrnesys Blabberings March 13th, 2008 at 10:42

image Heres the round up for this week, but first I am finding a trend in my feed reading, I am consistantly having about 200 unread items in my feed so I may have to make some difficult decisions in terms of unsubscribing from certain blogs. Interestingly it is the blogs that are particularly volumous that I am most tempted to unsubscribe from, maybe quality instead of quantity, I wonder if this is the same for you? It may indicate an interesting message for bloggers.- Jim Martin has an excellent story about a surprise phone call which taught him that people are not easily written off.- Donovan Palmer says we can choose to have a happy heart, this was an encourgement to me yesterday.- An Island 600 miles from the north pole is getting the sun back, I felt just like this a few weeks ago,...

iPhone or not? via Byrnesys Blabberings February 29th, 2008 at 15:45

image My contract is coming up for renewal, its a contract I took just to bide my time until the iPhone was released. Then it was released and I was thoroughly dissapointed with O2’s outrageously poor allowances with extortionate line rental. But now O2 has seriously improved their contracts to make it much more competitive, so the only consierdation now it whether to buy the phone itself, with the 8GB starting at £269 its not a drop in the ocean.Network World posted a 10 pros and 10 cons here. The biggest draw back for me is the slower edge connections outside of wifi networks, any UK users out there want to comment on o2’s EDGE network? Also I would have to change my iPod mindset from "cram it all on" to "pick the ones you want" to move from my chock-a-block 30G...

New last.fm and flickr plugins via Byrnesys Blabberings January 22nd, 2008 at 14:18

image You may have noticed I have installed a couple of new plugins in the sidebar. They’re integrating my scrobbler (click here to find out more) and flickr feeds.Last.fm records plugin - ("What I am listening to" on the left) - This basically follows the last tracks listened on iTunes and shows the album cover for the last 3 albums I listened to.FlickrRSS (on the right) -  This  is a compromise plugin, I wanted something that was slim and just included a simple sidebar, which FlickrRSS does, the only draw back is that because it is based on the RSS feed it can only show the most recent photos. The exception or work around is defining which tags it picks up within the options. ...

The dissapointments of the Macbook Air but what can we expect in the future via Byrnesys Blabberings January 19th, 2008 at 11:57

image There has been many thoughts that the macbook air has brought in many of the good thing about a ultra-portable such as external optical drive (a feature which seems to be getting a lot of bad press, but Im for it!), 3lb weight, 0.16" thin (at its thinnest) while keeping the relatively large 13" widescreen display. I guess mac were trying to go portable while keeping the display large for their designer "on the move" niche. In essence it seems people wanted a super slim re-make of the 12" powerbook G4 and the macbook has made trade off’s in both direction which may leave many continuing to put their money in the direction of macbook and macbook pro’s. That being said their will undoubtedly be a good sales rate for the macbook air as it will have...
